Coming to a new school can be an exciting time, but it can also be stressful with the amount of changes and differences from high school. From not having a consistent 8-3 schedule to having classes all across campus and online, it can be challenging to figure out where to go for assistance. Bismarck State College has resources from places to eat and get a coffee to resources that can help new students, both academically and mentally, to figure out how the college works and to help get started.
The main place to stop in BSC is the Student Union. This is the building where most of the student resources are located, including the help desk, the bookstore, Residence Life, the counseling office, Mystic Java and the Mystic Marketplace . The first stop from the main entrance is the Information desk. This is the place where questions can be asked, replace lost student ids and provide assistance in different things such as providing home COVID tests to those who need them. Open from 7:30 to 4 with a lunch break at 1.
Next door from the desk is the Bookstore. This is not only the place where books can be picked up downstairs, they also sell various BSC themed merchandise and other objects such as cups, bottles and dorm and school supplies.
Straight and to the right hidden off in the furthest left corner is Residence Life. This place mostly deals with issues pertaining to those who live or want to live in one of the many dorms across campus. Additionally, Amanda Morse, one of the leaders of Intramurals, an activities group for games such as frolf and bowling, so questions related to that can be asked with her.
Downstairs across from Residence Life is the Counseling office also known as the Mystic advising and Counseling Center (MACC) and the Accessibility office. Scheduled appointments can be made to talk with one of the few counselors at the front desk. Due to the limited amount of open times counselors have, Joey Stack, student service assistant, recommends limiting the amount of walk-in visits made unless in moments of crisis where help is most needed such as. The accessibility center can help with educational problems pertaining to a disability to the best of their abilities.
Back upstairs to the left is Mystic Java and Mystic Marketplace further off. Mystic Java is the main cafe currently open from 7:30 a.m - 8 p.m which serves drinks such as hot, iced and blended coffee, tea, Italian sodas and Red bulls. Mystic Marketplace is the school’s cafeteria that serves Breakfast from 7-10:15 am, Lunch from 10:45-1:30 pm and Dinner is from 4:30-7 pm with snacks and drinks sold until closing at 7. Dining dollars can be used at both places and at any coffee shop on campus.
Across the street from the Union are the three main buildings on campus: Schafer Hall to the west, Lea hall to the southeast and the Jack science center to the northeast. These halls are where the majority of classes are held, with the Jack Science Center hosting STEM subjects , LEA hall hosting English and art and Schafer Hall hosting social studies, language, history, music and various other subjects . Not only do these halls contain classes, they also contain their fair share of resources as well.
Located in Schafer Hall is the Computer help desk, financial aid, student finance, academic records, the Sykes student success center tutoring hall(8 am to 4pm M-F) and the Sydney J Lee Auditorium, The Jack Science Center contains Computer labs, Student study and Admissions and Lea Hall has the art gallery with different exhibits every month and the library with open use computers, a quiet room and the Book Bean coffee shop, which is not open yet due to lack of staff . Disc golf discs and maps can be rented from here as well.
Located on the north side of campus is the BSC Aquatic and Wellness Center (Monday-Thursday: 5:30am–10pm Friday: 5:30am–8pm Saturday: 7am–7pm Sunday: Noon–7pm Swimming pools will close 30 minutes before the rest of the facility.) Free with a student ID, students can get in to work out in the gymnasium, use the pool and attend fitness classes. Next to the gym, open from 9-7 on Monday to Thursday and 9-2 on Friday, is Epic Nutrition which sells tea, coffee, protein shakes and bakery items.
On the other side of campus lies the National Energy Center of Excellence and the Armory with the Tennis Court in between. The Energy Center contains most of the college’s administration, some of the polytechnic classes and another cafe in the break room, Power Bean, open from… The Armory contains Mystic Media classes, studios and the gymnasium where basketball and volleyball games are played. Students can get into the games for free with a BSC ID.
Well Bean is open in the Health Sciences building, room 163 from 8-12 pm, on the east end of campus.
